Archaeologists have recovered palettes for grinding pigments, narrow kohl tubes, applicator sticks, mirrors, combs, ointment jars, perfume vessels, and cosmetic boxes. Some were simple and functional. Others were made from valuable stone, faience, ivory, glass, obsidian, or gold, demonstrating that their contents could be precious possessions as well as everyday necessities.

Access was not equal. Ordinary people may have used locally available pigments and simpler containers, while wealthy households and members of the royal court could obtain finely crafted vessels and more expensive imported ingredients. An obsidian ointment jar with a gold rim from the burial of Princess Sithathoryunet, for example, illustrates how cosmetics could also communicate wealth and rank.5

What Was Egyptian Kohl?

The word kohl is now commonly used for ancient Egyptian eye paint, but it should not be imagined as one standardized formula. Scientific analysis has shown that ancient eye cosmetics varied by date, location, intended color, and method of preparation. Different mixtures could contain naturally occurring minerals, deliberately manufactured compounds, liquids, fats, gums, or other binding materials.4

Two minerals are especially important. Malachite, a green copper carbonate mineral, produced green eye paint. Galena, or lead sulfide, produced the dark gray or black pigment most strongly associated with the Egyptian look today. British Museum records indicate that green malachite was used in earlier periods and that galena later became the more prominent eye cosmetic.2

How Eye Paint Was Prepared and Applied

Mineral pigments had to be processed before they could be used. They were crushed or ground into a fine powder on a palette and then blended with a liquid or fatty substance to create a workable paste. Museum descriptions record mixtures prepared with water or fat, showing that there was no single universal method.1 2

The finished cosmetic was stored in a small container and applied with a slender stick. In practical terms, the binder helped the powder adhere to the eyelids and surrounding skin. From an artistic perspective, the dark outline emphasized the shape of the eye and created a striking contrast against the skin.

Both men and women wore eye paint. It was therefore not restricted to one gender, nor was it simply the ancient equivalent of modern fashion makeup. It belonged to a broader practice of grooming, presentation, and bodily protection.2

Did Kohl Really Protect the Eyes?

This is where the history becomes especially interesting—and where careful wording matters. Several practical explanations for Egyptian eye paint have been proposed. Dark pigment around the eyes may have reduced some reflected glare, while a layer of cosmetic could have formed a limited barrier against dust. Certain formulations may also have discouraged flies or affected microorganisms associated with eye disease.1

The strongest scientific evidence comes from research on unusual lead compounds found in surviving Egyptian cosmetics. Researchers identified substances including laurionite and phosgenite. Because these compounds do not simply occur in convenient cosmetic form in nature, their presence indicates deliberate preparation rather than the accidental use of raw ore.3

In a 2010 laboratory study, very low concentrations of one of these lead salts stimulated cultured human skin cells to produce more nitric oxide, a molecule involved in the body’s nonspecific immune response. The researchers proposed that this reaction might have helped strengthen local defenses around the eyes.3

What the experiment does—and does not—show

The study offers a plausible biological mechanism for why certain carefully prepared eye cosmetics may have had protective value. It does not prove that every kohl recipe prevented infection, that every wearer received a health benefit, or that lead-based makeup was harmless.

Ancient recipes were highly diverse. A large scientific study of cosmetic residues from numerous containers found substantial variation in their mineral composition and manufacturing methods. The word “kohl” can therefore cover many different products rather than one predictable substance with one predictable effect.4

Modern safety warning

Ancient Egyptian formulas should be studied as history, not copied as skincare instructions. Lead is a toxic metal, and exposure can damage multiple organs and body systems. Historical evidence that a particular lead salt produced a useful cellular response does not make lead-based cosmetics safe for modern use.7

Oils, Ointments, and Skin Care

Eye paint is the most famous Egyptian cosmetic, but it was only one part of a much larger personal-care tradition. Stone and glass vessels were used to store ointments, salves, cosmetics, and perfumed oils. Some jars had thick stone walls that helped protect their valuable contents from heat, while others were designed as luxury objects worthy of royal or elite ownership.

In a hot and often dry environment, fatty ointments and oils could soften the skin and reduce dryness. They also worked as carriers for fragrances and powdered pigments. Museum records identify vessels intended for salves, ointments, and perfumed oils, although the exact recipe once stored in an empty jar usually cannot be reconstructed from appearance alone. 5 6

Organic materials present a special challenge to archaeologists because fats, plant oils, fragrances, and other ingredients can decompose or become contaminated over thousands of years. Modern chemical techniques can sometimes detect traces, but researchers must distinguish between the vessel’s original contents, later reuse, burial materials, conservation products, and environmental contamination.

Red ochre provides another example of Egypt’s mineral-based color palette. British Museum collections include red ochre associated with palettes and cosmetic equipment, although red ochre was also widely used for painting and other purposes. Archaeological context is therefore essential: a red pigment is not automatically lipstick or rouge simply because it was found in Egypt.8

This caution applies broadly. Ancient pictures may show idealized appearances rather than ordinary daily reality, while containers do not always preserve their original contents. A responsible reconstruction uses several kinds of evidence together: artistic representations, written records, object design, residue analysis, burial context, and comparison with securely identified materials.

Cosmetics, Religion, and the Afterlife

Ancient Egyptian religion placed great importance on bodily integrity, renewal, and continued existence after death. Objects needed for life could therefore be placed in a tomb so that the deceased would remain properly equipped in the next world.

Cosmetic vessels, mirrors, combs, eye paint, oils, and ointments were among such possessions. The Metropolitan Museum of Art notes that small jars used for cosmetics and perfumed oils became part of burial equipment intended to meet the deceased person’s needs in the afterlife.6

Cosmetics could also express the hope that the dead would be rejuvenated. A Middle Kingdom ointment jar belonging to Sithathoryunet is described as part of a tradition in which beautification was connected with the desired renewal of the deceased.5

This does not mean that makeup itself was believed to preserve an entire body. Mummification involved a much more complex set of physical and ritual procedures. Instead, cosmetic goods helped present the deceased as complete, cared for, socially recognizable, and prepared to continue life beyond the tomb.

What the Evidence Supports

Some preparations had plausible practical or medicinal functions, but recipes varied greatly. Many stories about individual beauty routines, especially those attributed to Cleopatra, come from later tradition, modern advertising, or unsupported repetition rather than direct contemporary evidence.

Cleopatra VII lived during the Ptolemaic period, more than two thousand years after the earliest Egyptian cosmetic palettes. Treating her as the inventor or representative of every Egyptian beauty practice compresses a very long and changing history into the biography of one famous ruler.

It is more accurate to speak of evolving traditions practiced across different regions, social classes, and historical periods. Materials, fashions, trade connections, and methods changed over time, just as personal-care products do today.

What Ancient Egyptian Cosmetics Reveal

  • Appearance and health were not completely separate categories. One preparation could serve decorative, practical, social, and ritual purposes at the same time.

They did, however, develop sophisticated techniques for selecting, processing, mixing, storing, and applying natural materials. Their cosmetic traditions reveal an observant society in which beauty was rarely only skin-deep.
