Walk into Shilin in China’s Yunnan Province and the familiar rules of a forest seem to change. Instead of trunks and branches, thousands of narrow rock pinnacles rise from the ground, forming corridors, towers and jagged silhouettes that look sculpted rather than naturally formed.

Known in English as the Stone Forest, Shilin is not a single cluster of unusual rocks. It is an internationally important karst landscape near Kunming, shaped through repeated phases of deposition, uplift, fracturing and dissolution over roughly 270 million years. Its value is geological, ecological and cultural—and its story is far more interesting than the popular image of a “petrified forest.”

Shilin is one of the world’s best-known examples of pinnacle karst. Karst landscapes develop where water gradually dissolves soluble rock, especially limestone and dolomite. At Shilin, that process acted on thick layers of carbonate sediment originally deposited in shallow seas during the late Paleozoic era.

Karst, in plain language: rainwater absorbs carbon dioxide from the air and soil, becoming mildly acidic. As it enters cracks in limestone, it dissolves tiny amounts of rock. Given enough fractures, water and time, those small chemical changes can enlarge joints, open channels and leave resistant ridges standing as pinnacles.

The landscape did not appear in one dramatic event. Tectonic forces uplifted and fractured the rock, while alternating periods of burial, exposure, erosion and renewed dissolution reshaped it. UNESCO describes the Stone Forest’s development as an episodic process extending across four major geological periods from the Permian to the present.

An important correction: Shilin was not primarily carved by glaciers. Its defining forms are the result of long-term karst dissolution, weathering, erosion, tectonic uplift and changing surface conditions.

UNESCO considers Shilin a world reference area for pinnacle karst because of the variety, density and scientific clarity of its landforms. The Shilin component of the South China Karst World Heritage property covers two core areas totaling 12,070 hectares, surrounded by a 22,930-hectare buffer zone.

The designation matters because the Stone Forest records far more than scenic erosion. Its rock layers, fractures, buried surfaces and exposed pinnacles help researchers reconstruct how tropical and subtropical karst landscapes evolve through changing climates and geological conditions.

Why some pinnacles resemble blades, towers or mushrooms

The shape of each formation reflects differences in rock type, fracture pattern, drainage and exposure. Water concentrates along certain joints, widening them faster than the surrounding stone. Resistant sections remain while weaker zones are removed. Viewed from different angles, the same formation may resemble a person, animal or object—which explains why generations of residents and guides have given individual rocks memorable names.

The Stone Forest is also a lived cultural landscape. The Sani people, part of the Yi ethnic group, have inhabited the region for more than two millennia, according to UNESCO. Their stories, music, embroidery, dance and festivals are closely connected to the surrounding karst terrain.

One of the best-known traditions is the epic of Ashima, a celebrated Sani narrative about a courageous young woman. A formation in the Minor Stone Forest is associated with her figure, and Ashima has become an enduring cultural symbol of the region. The story is richer and more specific than the simplified claim that an unnamed girl was turned to stone by a god as punishment.

The traditional Torch Festival is another major expression of local identity. Held according to the lunar calendar, it can include fire ceremonies, wrestling, music, dancing and community gatherings. Visitors should approach these traditions as living culture rather than as performances detached from the people who maintain them.

Respectful travel matters. Ask before photographing individuals, follow local guidance during ceremonies, and buy crafts from reputable local makers when possible. Cultural heritage is not just something to observe; it is sustained by communities.

“The Stone Forest” can refer to a wider geopark containing several contrasting landscapes, not merely the busiest network of paths seen in travel photographs. Each area reveals a different expression of the region’s geology.

Major Stone Forest

The classic maze of densely packed pinnacles. UNESCO notes that clusters here commonly rise about 20–50 metres, creating the forest-like skyline that gave Shilin its name.

Minor Stone Forest

A more open setting where vegetation, paths and individual formations—including the celebrated Ashima stone—create a gentler visual rhythm.

Naigu Stone Forest

Known for darker dolomitic limestone and a different atmosphere from the better-known gray pinnacles of the main scenic area.

Lakes, caves and rural scenery

The geopark also includes karst lakes, underground features, wooded areas and communities whose land use is intertwined with the landscape.

Light and weather change the experience dramatically. Low clouds can soften the skyline, while strong sunlight emphasizes grooves and fractures in the rock. The narrow passages also create shifting perspectives: a pinnacle that seems massive from one path may become a thin blade when seen from the side.

Despite its severe appearance, Shilin is not a barren stone desert. Trees, shrubs, grasses, mosses and other plants occupy soil pockets and sheltered crevices. Birds, insects and other animals use the mosaic of rock, water and vegetation, while caves and underground drainage systems provide additional habitats.

UNESCO reports that many plant and animal species in the geopark are protected. The vegetation is also part of the landscape’s visual and ecological integrity: roots stabilize soil, plant cover influences how water enters the rock, and intact catchments help maintain the natural processes that continue to shape the karst.

Tourism creates both opportunities and pressure. Visitor spending can support jobs and conservation, but crowding, waste, unauthorized climbing and damage to vegetation can degrade fragile areas. UNESCO’s management guidance emphasizes monitoring, water protection, community participation and control of tourism impacts.

Shilin lies roughly 86 kilometres from Kunming and is commonly visited as a day trip, although spending more time in the county makes it easier to explore beyond the busiest paths. Conditions, ticketing systems and transport schedules can change, so check the official scenic-area information shortly before travelling.

Choose footwear for stone paths

Wear shoes with reliable grip. Steps and polished limestone can become slippery after rain, and some routes involve uneven surfaces.

Allow more time than expected

The main routes twist through narrow corridors. Extra time lets you pause at viewpoints instead of treating the landscape as a quick photo stop.

Expect changing weather

Bring water, sun protection and a light rain layer. Conditions on the Yunnan Plateau can shift during the day.

The Stone Forest is compelling because it compresses several scales of time into one walk. The limestone began as marine sediment hundreds of millions of years ago. Water then worked through microscopic weaknesses until those weaknesses became corridors, cliffs and pinnacles. Communities settled among the formations, named them, told stories about them and built traditions around the land.

Seen this way, Shilin is neither a geological curiosity nor a scenic backdrop. It is an evolving Earth system and a cultural homeland. Its stone towers may appear motionless, but water, vegetation, weather and human activity are still shaping what future generations will inherit.
