Track 03What Are the Grammy Awards?
The Grammy Awards are the annual honors presented by the Recording Academy, a U.S. organization of music professionals founded in 1957. Unlike chart awards that reward sales or streams, a Grammy is decided by peer vote: the Academy's voting members — performers, songwriters, producers, engineers and other creators — judge recordings on artistic and technical merit.
The name comes from the gramophone, the early record player, and the trophy is a gilded miniature gramophone. Each statuette is handcrafted by Billings Artworks in Ridgway, Colorado, which is one reason winners often describe it as surprisingly heavy in the hand.

Track 04A Short History: 1959 to Today
The Grammys began as the music industry's answer to the Oscars and Emmys. Over the decades the show has grown from a hotel banquet into one of the most-watched live events in entertainment. A few milestones worth knowing for any Grammy trivia night:
- 1959The first Grammys are held on May 4, honoring 1958 recordings, in two places at once: the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills and the Park Sheraton in New York. Henry Mancini's The Music from Peter Gunn wins the first Album of the Year.
- 1973CBS begins airing the ceremony, a broadcast partnership that would run for more than five decades.
- 1981Christopher Cross becomes the first artist to win all four General Field awards in a single night.
- 2020Billie Eilish, at 18, becomes the youngest artist to sweep the Big Four — and only the second person to do it.
- 2023Beyoncé passes conductor Georg Solti's long-standing record of 31 wins to become the most-awarded artist in Grammy history.
- 2024Taylor Swift wins Album of the Year for Midnights, her fourth win in the category — the most by any artist.

Track 05The Big Four, Explained
Most of the 90-plus categories are tied to a specific genre or craft. Four awards sit above them all in the General Field, open to music of any genre. Mixing up Record of the Year and Song of the Year is the single most common Grammy trivia mistake, so here's the cheat sheet:
Album of the Year
Honors a complete album — the artist plus the producers, engineers, mixers, mastering engineers and songwriters of new material.
Record of the Year
Honors one specific recording of a song: the performing artist and the production team behind how it sounds.
Song of the Year
Honors the songwriters for the composition itself — the melody and lyrics — no matter who performs it.
Best New Artist
Honors a performer or group whose breakthrough into public awareness came during the eligibility year.
A simple way to remember it: Record is about the sound you hear on the track; Song is about the writing you could print as sheet music.
Track 06How Grammy Voting Works
Every Grammy season follows the same basic path, from submission to the golden envelope:
1. Eligibility window
A recording must be commercially released during a fixed period. For the 69th Grammys in 2027, that window runs from August 31, 2025, to August 28, 2026.
2. Entries and screening
Members and registered media companies submit eligible recordings online. The Academy's awards team and genre experts then check that each entry lands in the right category.
3. First-round voting
Voting members choose the nominees. In a few specialized craft categories, nominations are decided by committees of members who actively work in those crafts.
4. Final-round voting
Members vote again on the final nominees, and the results stay sealed until the envelopes are opened at the ceremony.
Why the winners surprise people: because the Grammys are peer-voted, the biggest hit of the year doesn't automatically win. Voters weigh craft, songwriting and production, which is why critically loved albums sometimes beat chart giants.

Stories that made the night
A first for Spanish-language music. Bad Bunny's Album of the Year win was the first ever for an album sung primarily in Spanish. His earlier album Un Verano Sin Ti had broken ground as the first all-Spanish album nominated in the category, but it did not win.
Kendrick Lamar's new record. Wins for "luther" and GNX lifted Lamar to 27 career Grammys, the most for any rapper in the award's history. He had also led all nominees that year with nine nominations.
New categories. The 2026 show introduced Best Traditional Country Album and Best Album Cover, part of the Academy's ongoing reshaping of its category list.

Beyoncé holds the all-time crown. Her 2023 wins carried her past Sir Georg Solti, the Hungarian-British conductor whose 31 Grammys — mostly for classical recordings — had stood as the record for years. In 2025 she added Album of the Year for Cowboy Carter.
Taylor Swift owns the Album of the Year record with four wins: Fearless (2010), 1989 (2016), folklore (2021) and Midnights (2024). Before her, Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon shared the record with three each.
Billie Eilish made history at the 2020 ceremony by winning all of the Big Four at age 18, joining Christopher Cross as the only artists to do it. Her brother and collaborator Finneas shares many of her songwriting Grammys, including 2026's Song of the Year.

The 2027 ceremony will air on ABC and stream on Disney+ and Hulu, the start of a 10-year deal announced in 2024. It ends the show's long run on CBS, which had broadcast the Grammys since 1973. Albums released inside the eligibility window — including Taylor Swift's The Life of a Showgirl and Rosalía's Lux — are widely expected to compete.

- Watch the year label. A ceremony honors music from the previous eligibility period, so "the 2026 Grammys" celebrated mostly 2024–2025 releases.
- Separate Record from Song. Record of the Year rewards the performance and production; Song of the Year rewards the songwriters.
- Count ceremonies, not years. The 1959 show was the 1st, so the 2027 show is the 69th.
